Elvis Presley's Jailhouse Rock

A little about Popular Music

Pop music is a difficult term to define precisely, this is because its meaning has shifted historically and is defined differently in different cultures. Broadly it refers to music that is generally considered to be of lesser importance than art music and is easily accessed by the masses.

The boundaries of pop music are blurred as over time different genres and individual pieces move in and out of the category of pop music dependent on the culture/background of the listener and indeed music is viewed through a cultural, political and social lens inherent within each listener.
However, hard pop music is to define there are historical trends and in practice pop music is often referenced as the music found in modern/modernising societies. Pop music developed in Europe and America from the 1800’s, whilst music in Latin America developed in the 1900’s and third world countries since the 20th century. However since  World War two, styles and practices developed particularly in the U.S and Britain have dominated popular music across the globe.
